Major global steelmaker deepens Australian ties to accelerate research and adoption of low-emission steel technologies.
POSCO Holdings (POSCO), a leading global steelmaker based in South Korea, has joined The Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC). This partnership marks an important milestone in HILT CRC’s efforts to foster global collaboration, particularly in developing low-carbon ironmaking technologies.

A major player in the global steel market, POSCO sources 70% of its iron ore from Australia. The company’s decision to join HILT highlights the mutual benefits of closer engagement between Australian and international organisations in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. It also reflects POSCO’s commitment to securing sustainable raw material supplies and advancing green steel production.
Jenny Selway, CEO of HILT CRC, said that welcoming POSCO into HILT CRC was an exciting milestone.
“POSCO’s leadership in the global steel industry and its strategy for developing low-carbon steelmaking will contribute to heavy industry’s transition to a net-zero future,” Ms Selway said. “Their participation in HILT CRC underscores the significance of global collaboration in addressing the need for sustainable solutions in steel production.”
HILT has established a new partnership level specifically aimed at large global steelmakers and other companies that have strong business ties with HILT CRC’s Core and Key Partners. As the first HILT member in this category, POSCO will access research findings, industry events and networking opportunities within the HILT CRC collaborative ecosystem, helping advance low-carbon solutions that align with both organisations’ sustainability goals.
The partnership also enables POSCO to contribute to the global movement towards sustainable, low-emission steel production while strengthening its ties to the Australian resources sector.
“We see tremendous value in collaborating with HILT CRC,” said Jinchul Baung, POSCO’s primary representative for the partnership. “As the global steel industry faces pressure to reduce emissions, innovative low-carbon ironmaking technologies will be pivotal to achieving our sustainability targets.”
HILT CRC is proud to have POSCO join its growing international ecosystem, which continues to drive innovation and support industry’s shift to net-zero emissions.
