New partnership strengthens international collaboration on low-emission iron and steelmaking

Nanjing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (NISCO), one of China’s established steelmakers, has joined The Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC), becoming the first Chinese steel company to join HILT CRC’s collaborative ecosystem.

The new partnership strengthens links between Australian research and industry capability and one of the world’s most important steel markets, supporting closer engagement on the technologies and knowledge needed to reduce emissions from iron and steel production.

Based in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, NISCO produces steel materials for sectors spanning energy, marine engineering, advanced manufacturing, transport and infrastructure. The company has identified high-tech green development as part of its strategic direction and has been active in low-carbon initiatives across its industrial value chain.

HILT CRC Chief Executive Officer Jenny Selway said NISCO’s decision to join HILT CRC reflected the increasing importance of international collaboration in hard-to-abate sectors.

“NISCO joining HILT CRC is significant because decarbonising iron and steel requires cooperation across the whole value chain, from raw materials and processing technologies through to steelmaking and end use,” Ms Selway said.

“As the first Chinese steel company to join HILT CRC, NISCO brings an important international perspective to our network and creates new opportunities for Australian researchers and industry partners to engage with one of the world’s major steel-producing economies.”

The partnership will provide NISCO with opportunities to engage with HILT CRC’s network of researchers, industry

partners and project activity, as well as access to events, research insights and knowledge-sharing across HILT CRC’s low-carbon heavy industry ecosystem.

NISCO Vice President Mingliang Qiao (pictured with Ms Selway) said joining HILT CRC would support the company’s engagement with Australian expertise in low-emission iron and steelmaking.

“The transition to lower-emissions steel production requires practical collaboration between steelmakers, raw material suppliers, researchers and technology developers,” Mr Qiao said.

“Through HILT CRC, NISCO looks forward to engaging with Australian and international partners on research and innovation that can contribute to more sustainable iron and steel value chains.”
