SUMMARY:HILT CRC public webinar: Pathways to low-carbon alumina production
DESCRIPTION:Pathways to low-carbon alumina production\n  \nJoin us for our upcoming webinar\, presented by Professor Gus Nathan (HILT CRC Research Director & Director\, Centre for Energy Technology\, The University of Adelaide) and Dr Woei Saw (HILT CRC Senior Lecturer\, The University of Adelaide) who will discuss the pathways that are emerging as being among the most prospective for decarbonising alumina production. \nAlumina production is among the industrial processes that is challenging to abate due to the lack of access to low-carbon energy sources at sufficient scale and affordability\, and also the lack of commercially proven technology to utilise it. Alumina production comprises both a lower temperature digestion/purification process and a high temperature calcination one\, with the temperature and details of the former tailored to each ore resource and the latter being undertaken in a range of types of high temperature reactor\, depending on the plant\, such as fluidised beds and flash reactors. \nConversion of these processes to operate on emerging low-carbon energy sources such as hydrogen or renewable electricity will require significant changes to the plant and in turn\, require significant capital investment. There is also a large amount of uncertainty about the how the relative cost of the various emerging low-carbon energy sources will evolve into the future. However\, there is also potential to generate new opportunities for efficiency improvements from such conversions\, which has potential to mitigate these costs. In addition\, the direct use of heat generated from concentrated solar thermal energy technology also has potential to be competitive. \nThis webinar provides an excellent opportunity to hear the current status in the development of solutions and will explore the prospective pathways forward.

SUMMARY:HILT CRC public webinar: The Net-Zero Industries Mission – accelerating the industrial decarbonisation journey
DESCRIPTION:The Net-Zero Industries Mission – accelerating the industrial decarbonisation journey\n  \nJoin us for our upcoming webinar\, presented by Dr Alan Monaghan (SVP Technology and Expert Solutions – Worley and Global Mission Coordinator – Net Zero Industries\, Mission Innovation) and Elvira Lutter (Program Manager – the Climate and Energy Fund of the Austrian Federal Government and Mission Director – Net-Zero Industries\, Mission Innovation) who will discuss the Net Zero Industries Mission (NZIM)\, the most ambitious undertaking of Mission Innovation since its inception in 2015. \nNZIM is taking on the challenge to help accelerate the adoption of decarbonisation technologies across the heavy emitting and hard to abate sectors including iron and steel\, cement and lime\, chemicals and refining and all other high intensity industrial activities. Together this group produce 25% of the world emissions and some of the hardest and most capital intensive to achieve net zero. \nWhile there is significant overlap between NZIM and the HILT CRC program of technology and research advancement\, NZIM takes this journey further by focusing on the: \n\ndemonstration of industrial scale decarbonisation technologies;\nidentification and effective management of barriers to technology investment and deployment;\nrecognition of the vital human stakeholder role in achieving trust and confidence in the scale deployment of these demonstrated technologies.\n\nThe NZI Mission is a government initiative however\, significant industrial involvement and leadership will be essential in ensuring the mission activities and other key stakeholders actions support industry in their journey and accelerated decarbonisation. \nThis webinar will highlight the opportunities and benefits available to our industry partners to be founding members of the mission leadership teams in assisting and accelerating their own industrial decarbonisation journey.

SUMMARY:HILT CRC public webinar: An overview of thermal-based energy storage systems
DESCRIPTION:An overview of thermal-based energy storage systems\n  \nJoin us for our upcoming webinar\, presented by Laureate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi\, Director of the Priority Research Centre for Frontier Energy Technologies and Utilisation at The University of Newcastle (Australia). \nThis webinar covers a contemporary overview of thermal-based energy storage systems including sensible and latent heat thermal energy storage as well as thermochemical and thermomechanical energy storage. In the first part of the webinar a general introduction to energy storage is made covering topics as diverse as variation in demand and supply\, key objectives and challenges associated with the energy storage\, integration of energy storage systems\, and finally a classification of energy storage systems. \nThe second part of the webinar is dedicated to a range of topics on sensible and latent heat thermal energy storage. This is followed by the coverage of thermochemical energy storage (e.g.\, redox\, carbonate\, hydride\, hydroxide\, and sulphur-based systems). Similarly\, several topics related to thermomechanical energy storage will also be covered.
