Basu Tandon is a PhD candidate at Swinburne University of Technology, researching electric smelting furnace (ESF) fundamentals and slag thermodynamics for high-gangue Australian ores, in collaboration with CSIRO. His work aims to advance the sustainability and process efficiency of ESF steelmaking technology. Basu holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur, India, and a Master of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. AT IIT, he was awarded the DAAD Scholarship, which supported a year as an exchange student at Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. Prior to his PhD, Basu spent three years at Tata Steel Limited, India, working in direct reduction ironmaking, process optimisation and predictive modelling. Basu brings strong skills in research, data analysis, and process optimisation to his work on sustainable steelmaking technologies. Outside of academics, he enjoys working out, running, cycling and reading.
