Overview
This project provides a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) estimation using the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) guidelines (Australian Government, 2021) of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from the iron ore, alumina, steel and cement and lime industries. The study will establish carbon mapping benchmarks for the participating partner production activities using in-house data together with industry data. These estimations will act as a benchmark for initial planning and research direction for HILT CRC, and will provide the starting position for the industry low-carbon roadmaps which are a major outcome of Program 3. Assessments will be completed for the iron and steel, alumina, and cement and lime industries.
Project Details
The aim of this project is to understand the current carbon position/status of each major component/device/sub-process and overall process of each Australian heavy industry using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to map the energy and material flows of the process.
Research Areas
Industry roadmaps and transition strategies
Outcomes
Establishing a baseline/inventory database which can be used to demonstrate the benefits of future HILT CRC projects, including net carbon reduction in the process and Life-Cycle carbon reduction. For example, identifying the key carbon contributor(s) in the process, including waste, and identifying the opportunities to improve energy efficiency for the current process and its supply chain, which can also contribute to lower carbon footprints.
