Overview
This project reviews the opportunities and challenges for low carbon industrial transformation in regional hub development. While each sector has its own series of challenges in using renewable hydrogen production, Australia’s commitment to low-carbon industrial transformation will drive much needed policy and regulatory frameworks to assist in the zero carbon transition. This project will review the dynamic opportunities that present themselves for heavy industry low carbon transformation in regional hub development.
Project Details
This project identifies the nature of international experience in the development of heavy industry regional hubs with a view to identifying best practice and the opportunities for heavy industry low-carbon development and to add value to proposed ‘hydrogen’ hubs.
HILT CRC is seeking to formalise a framework around the regional hub and hydrogen production research development as a matter of priority.
Also included is the important role of regional development in the low-carbon transition and the many challenges of infrastructure investment, workforce education and training, supply chain development and hub and cluster ‘anchor’ participants. These elements will be examined in detail in this research.

Outcomes
This project will initiate HILT CRCs strategic review of regional hubs development. This research will also help to map the concurrent initiatives being planned, including by HILT participants in the hydrogen and regional development space.
Broad questions and analysis include:
- Where does Australian Regional Development and Technology transfer sit?
- What can we learn from other international industrial hub development particularly relative to the zero carbon transition?
- How should Australia move forward with regional hubs and Hydrogen hubs?
- What infrastructure, resourcing and human capital requirements will assist in hub development?
- What are the conditions for the successful deployment of regional hydrogen hubs?
