Lebing Zhang

Lebing Zhang is a PhD student in Economics at Curtin University. Her research focuses on global value chains (GVCs), eco-efficiency and decarbonisation, with a particular interest in Australia’s heavy industries. She holds a BSc in International Business Economics from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and an International MA in Economy, State and Society from University College London. Lebing's research looks at how Australia’s heavy industries are connected to global supply chains, and how those connections affect – and are affected by – decarbonisation. It explores how relying on imported inputs can limit gains in emissions and resource efficiency if those inputs are carbon-intensive, while exporting materials into low-carbon markets may create stronger incentives for cleaner production. Her project also considers how decarbonisation could change Australia’s role in global value chains, helping heavy industries remain competitive as demand grows for lower-emissions materials. Outside of academics, she enjoys photography and hiking.
